Three patients were treated for smoke inhalation after an apartment fire in the middle of the night yesterday.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue crews were alerted to a fire alarm at a building in the 900 block of Bowen Road at about 3:25 a.m. Monday.
Deputy chief Tim Doyle said the fire was contained to one unit, which suffered fire and smoke damage.
“It was an alarms call originally that was upgraded to a confirmed structure fire while crews were en route,” he said. “So that just changes our response from two engines to an additional engine plus [we move another] engine into the area in case we need extra manpower.”
Three patients were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
