Crews, residents brace for storm

Stay with us through the evening for any updates on forecasted flooding

Crews around the Central Okanagan are busy out preparing for flooding this evening.

On the Westside, crews were fortifying the bridge over Power’s Creek at Gellatly Bay with concrete blocks in an effort to stop water from coming over the bridge.

As of about 5:30 p.m. the water level was at the bottom of the bridge.

Rains are now expected later this evening and all warnings about flooding remain in effect.

The Westbank First Nation issued a local state of emergency, joining other municipalities in the area.

In Kelowna on Burne Ave., residents had fortified the area around their homes while right across B.C. areas were expecting high water.

The YMCA of Okanagan is opening its doors to community members who may be affected.

“We need to look after one another during this time,” says Sharon Peterson, CEO of the YMCA of Okanagan. “Our hearts go out to those who have been affected by the floods, and we want people to know that we are here to help if they need a supportive community and a shower.”

The YMCA of Okanagan welcomes individuals to either the Kelowna Family YMCA or the H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre to use the showers free of charge during this time. All they ask is that you bring photo ID upon entry.

For any questions, the YMCA of Okanagan is urging individuals in need to contact the Y’s member services team at 250-491-9622.
