Crime stats show spike from 2017 to 2018 in Parksville

Property crime saw highest number of violations; violent crime numbers down from 2015 levels

Incident-based crime statistics for Parksville show a 45 per cent increase for all violations combined between 2017 and 2018.

Crime statistics released by Stats Canada show there were 1,592 incidents in Parksville in 2018, up from 1,090 in 2017, 1,260 in 2016, 1,245 in 2015 and 899 in 2014.

The highest amount of violations are seen in regard to property crime. In 2018, total property crime violations reached 1,200, up from 718 in 2017. There were 24 counts of theft of motor vehicle in 2018, up from 19 in 2017, 20 in 2016, 23 in 2015 and 15 in 2014. Theft $5,000 or under from a motor vehicle saw 230 counts in 2018, up from 133 in 2017.

Total violent crime Criminal Code Violations in 2018 reached 104, up from 95 in 2017 but down from 126 in 2015.

There were zero attempted murders or homicides from 2014 to 2018; seven sexual assaults level 1 incidents in 2018 and six in 2017 and two robberies in 2018, down from three in 2017.

In 2018, there were six counts of criminal harassment, up from three in 2017 and down from nine in 2015. There were 23 counts of uttering threats in 2018, up from 17 in 2017.

In Qualicum Beach, stats show all violations jumped 39 per cent in 2018 with 333 incidents reported, up from 239 in 2017.

For the town, total property crime counts reached 248 in 2018, up from 152 in 2017.

Theft $5,000 or under from a motor vehicle saw 58 counts in 2018, up from 18 in 2017 and theft of a motor vehicle saw eight counts in 2018, up from six in 2017.

Calls to Oceanside RCMP for comment were not returned by Friday, July 26.

Parksville Mayor Ed Mayne said he will review the stats when he returns from vacation.
