Crosswalk makes its mark

Coldstream preparing to splash colours of inclusivity on Kalamalka Road

Coldstream is about to get a little more colourful.

Preparation took place Friday for the rainbow crosswalk on Kalamalka Road, at Kal Beach. Painting is expected to take place this week at the crosswalk between the beach and parking lot.

“It will be a new bright addition to the area,” said Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick. “I’m glad it’s finally going in.”

The rainbow crosswalk was initially planned to be in place for the May long weekend.

“It’s been delayed because of the flooding and other tasks that popped up,” said Garlick.

Splashing the colours of inclusivity at the popular spot was agreed upon back in July of last year. A group of Coldstream residents pushed for the crosswalk with a petition, letters of support and a presentation led by local youth Aasha Sanders.

Council agreed to the request with: “the idea that it’s inclusive for all,” said Garlick.

While many are thrilled to see the colourful addition moving forward, there will likely be some opposition as well.

“I’m sure there will be some controversy over it,” said Garlick.
