Cruise ship cancels its visit to Nanaimo

Silver Explorer travels to Vancouver instead for repairs

There were supposed to be two cruise ships stopping in Nanaimo on the same day, but one of them has had to cancel.

Tourism Nanaimo sent out a press release today advising that the SilverSeas’ Silver Explorer cruise ship got tangled with a fishing net in the Bering Sea and had to alter course to dry dock in Vancouver for repairs.

“This damage has resulted in changes to the ship’s itinerary,” noted the Cruise Line Industry Association in the release.

The cruise ship had been slated to visit on July 11.

“This cancellation is unfortunate for Nanaimo businesses and tourism operators, but also for the passengers who won’t get to visit our beautiful city on this trip,” said Karen Bannister, director of destination marketing for Tourism Vancouver Island and manager of Tourism Nanaimo, in the release.

She added that she isn’t discouraged and that Nanaimo continues to grow in its potential as a destination on a global scale.

“Of course it is a disappointment that the Silver Explorer cannot make its call to Nanaimo,” noted Ian Marr, Port of Nanaimo CEO, in the release. “The passenger count of 135 will be missed, but not to overshadow the arrival of the Azamara Quest on the same day with a capacity close to 700 passengers.”
