Crystal Terraces makes a comeback

News briefs from the town’s March 12 regular council meeting.

• The oft-delayed Crystal Terraces multi-family residential development on the slopes of the hillside overlooking Highway 19A and the ocean in Qualicum Beach was granted another development permit. This will be the developers’ second such permit (the first was issued in 2005 and has since expired), which is a precursor to a building permit. Crystal Terraces’ last building permit was cancelled in June, 2011. A different, building permit must be granted before any construction work starts.

• Town council gave the OK to a land owner to create two equally-sized lots at 327 Polar Ave. — with the caveat that one lot be allowed to hold a two-story house and the other, only a one-story house. The matter had generated animosity from neighbouring homeowners over the potential loss of ocean views.

• Residents of Qualicum Woods are asking for a crosswalk at Village Way and Qualicum Road. Council will respond on April 2.

• The town approved, in principle, a new Beach Day festival, scheduled for July 21, 2012.

• On March 29, council, unionized staff and the RCMP will announce Town Watch, a local crime prevention program.

• Council approved around $5,000 in subsidies to local groups for facility rentals.

• Council meets again April 2.
