Cultus Lake residents voted 89 per cent in favour of borrowing nearly $4 million to upgrade the tiny community’s water system Saturday.
In earlier advance polls, and in a vote on May 14, 178 people cast their ballot on a proposal that will integrate the Cultus Lake water and distribution system with the Parkview water system. Both water systems are managed by the Fraser Valley Regional District.
The cost of the project – which will require construction of a trunk line, water mains, additional fire hydrants and a new reservoir – is $4.9 million.
Cultus Lake will need to borrow $3.9 million to complete the work.
A total of 158 residents agreed to the plan. Another 20 voted against.
Both the Cultus Lake Park Board and the Fraser Valley Regional District supported the project. They say it will improve water quality, correct low water pressure and ensure more adequate fire protection.
Construction will begin in September, 2016 and carry on through 2017.
Under British Columbia’s Local Government Act, resident electors in Cultus Lake park needed to vote on whether to authorize the borrowing of up to $3.9 million.
Results from the vote won’t be official until May 16. They will be posted to both the FVRD and Cultus Lake Park web sites.
