Members of the Cumberland Fire Department spent the early morning hours Friday (July 23) extinguishing a brush fire near the intersection of Lake Trail Road and Comox Logging Road.
Around 4 a.m., crews attending the fire which grew to about one acre in size. According to reports, the fire was believed to have started by either a cigarette or a motorcycle muffler igniting dry grass.
It took firefights about five hours on scene to completely extinguish and mop up the fire.
Currently, the fire danger rating on the east coast of Vancouver Island including the Comox Valley is at extreme – the maximum rating by the BC Wildfire Service.
The rating means extremely dry forest fuels and the fire risk is very serious; new fires will start easily, spread rapidly and challenge fire suppression efforts.
