Chris Adams, of Adams Environmental Solutions stands among a now almost six-foot-high stand of willow on the river bank at Lois Atchison’s home on South Shore Road.
Adams and David Polster, of Polster Environmental Services, repaired Atchison’s collapsed bank in April of this year using a technique called waddle fencing which breaks the bank into tiers and strengthens the bank by planting willow and red dogwood cuttings.
Adams says that these cuttings take root and stabilize the embankment, and that they grow faster with each passing year. Eventually they will thin out and make way for other species, such as maple, to take root, returning the slope to its natural state.
