David Hogg, who for the last 30 years has led the Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band, is Nelson’s 2018 Citizen of the Year.
Hogg, a Nelson native, started learning how to play bagpipes at age six. In 1989 he took over as pipe major of the band, which is celebrating its centennial birthday this year.
The band, led by Hogg, is a staple at community events including Remembrance Day, Canada Day, school graduations, activity fundraisers such as the Terry Fox Run, and air and navy cadet inspections. An exhibit featuring the history of the band is currently on display at Touchstones Museum.
Bob Tremblay, grand knight of the Nelson Knights of Columbus, said Hogg’s nomination was compelling.
“I think the overall persuasion was the depth of the presentation that was made on David’s behalf by his nominators and associated people who supported that.”
The Citizen of the Year, which is co-sponsored by the Nelson Knights of Columbus and the Nelson Star, has recognized local contributions to the community since 1963. Recent recipients have included Kim Charlesworth, Helen Jameson and Susanne Raschdorf.
Hogg will be recognized at a banquet April 12 at St. Joseph’s School, which is located at 523 Mill St. Doors open at 5 p.m.
