Mattes elected to Oliver town council in byelection

David Mattes is the latest addition to Oliver’s town council, according to preliminary results released after polls closed today.

Mattes will be taking the seat left vacant when Jack Bennest stepped down, vacating his council seat on Sept. 30. Mattes received 365 votes in the byelection, 168 more than his nearest competitor, Aimee Grice.

Mattes will be sworn in on Dec. 11, before Oliver council’s regular meeting.

In a release, Bennest said the reason he was stepping down mid-term was “the fun seems to be gone out of local politics.” The byelection was estimated to cost the Town of Oliver $11,040.

Bennest’s resignation triggered a byelection, with an advance poll on Nov. 22, and the general poll on Dec. 2. The total number of valid votes cast between the two polling days was 811.MATTES, David, 365GRICE, Aimee, 197MCKENNA, Peter, 101LAWLOR, Donald, 52HAMPSON, Patrick, 68KOSOLA, Susan, 15POLLARD, Charles, 8STELZNER, Lutz, 5

These preliminary results are based on the ballot accounts prepared for each of the opportunities and are subject to the determination of official election results by the chief election officer, Diane Vaykovich.
