Vanderhoof’s local RCMP detachment lodged 94 files, which included 10 prisoners, in the past week.
Safe cruising for Midnight Madness
National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day took place on Dec. 3, when RCMP detachments across the country stepped up with an enforcement blitz to discourage impaired drivers.
In Vanderhoof, over 400 vehicles were checked by general duty and traffic unit officers at five locations over the course of the day; one prohibited driver and one driver without a license were found.
Winter-proofing furry family members
Receiving several calls of concern for pets left in vehicles during the sub-zero weather last week, Vanderhoof’s RCMP remind owners to ensure their pets’ coats are adequate for the winter season.
While long-haired northern breeds may thrive in wintry temperatures, shorter-haired dogs may need extra layers, the police said.
Fentanyl overdose
A 23-year-old man, reportedly overdosed with fentanyl, was brought by friends to St. John Hospital for treatment on the night of Dec. 7.
Vanderhoof’s first case of suspected fentanyl overdosage was reported on Dec. 31 last year.
The police reminds the public that the ingestion of only two milligrams, or two grains, of the synthetic opioid can lead to death, and that the chemical is often mixed into other drugs, including marijuana, without the users’ knowledge.
From January to September this year, twenty-two fentanyl-detected deaths occurred in the Northern Health region, out of 332 in all of B.C., according to BC Coroners Service. Ninety-six per cent of these deaths involve at least one other substance, with cocaine being the drug most frequently detected in combination.
