Crime statistics in Summerland are showing decreases in many categories, according to the latest quarterly report from the Summerland RCMP detachment.
Earlier this month, Sgt. Stephane Lacroix presented the statistics to municipal council.
In most break and enter categories, the numbers this year have been down compared to last year, although business break and enters showed an increase.
In the first six months of this year, police recorded 15 break and enters, up from eight during the same period a year ago.
Lacroix said the increase was the result of criminal activity near the beginning of this year.
The number of vehicle thefts has decreased this year, with 10 reported in the first half of the year. During the same period last year, 17 vehicle thefts were reported.
The number of mischief complaints also dropped, from 39 in the first half of 2015 to 30 in the first half of this year.
Drug possession incidents were up significantly this year, with 20 cases reported so far this year. During the same period last year, eight incidents were recorded.
On the roads, the number of 24-hour suspensions and immediate roadside prohibitions both showed increases from last year’s figures.
These increases, and the increase in drug possession incidents, came as a result of police putting a greater effort into road checks.
