Deer cull ‘not working’

Members of the Animal Alliance of Canada travelled from Toronto to speak to Cranbrook city council on Monday, Nov. 5.

Members of the Animal Alliance of Canada travelled from Toronto to speak to Cranbrook city council on Monday, November 5, about why the cull of urban deer is not an effective way to control human/deer conflict.

Liz White, the director of the Animal Alliance of Canada, and Barry MacKay, the Canadian representative of Born Free USA, outlined their concerns about Cranbrook’s urban deer management methods, and asked council to consider other methods such as hazing, where dogs herd the deer out of town, or sterilization.

Also at Monday’s meeting, council dealt with concerns raised by the Cranbrook and District Search and Rescue Society about the future of their temporary home in the old fire hall.

Council also received with discussion a letter from Canada Post notifying it that developers will soon be required to pay for community mailboxes in new housing developments.
