Delta to offer free rec centre admission to local youth

Expanded youth admission pass first of three programs under new Delta Families First Initiative

This summer, Delta youth will be able to while away the hours at their local rec centres free of charge, thanks to the newly-expanded youth admission pass program.

Following a unanimous decision by Delta council on April 8, the new youth pass will give kids 10 to 18 years old (Grades 5 through 12) free admission to all City of Delta recreation centres and any drop-in activities at those facilities.

According to a recent press release, the pass is an investment to support more than 13,000 Delta youth by providing options to promote physical activity and healthy habits at a young age, while also offering kids free access to a safe environment in which to take part in recreational activities.

“I want families to know that their tax dollars are going towards community-minded policies and projects that serve the needs of Delta families first and help provide positive opportunities for children and youth,” Mayor George Harvie said in a press release. “Our priority as your mayor and council is to build upon and enhance the quality of life for our residents.”

Currently, the city offers a complimentary youth pass program for Delta students in Grades 5 through 8. This program will be replaced by the new expanded youth admission pass when the program begins on July 1.

The expanded youth admission pass program is part of Delta Families First, an initiative launched by council with the goal of investing in more sports, recreation and social health programs and amenities for the benefit and well-being of Delta families.

According the city’s website, council is working with staff in response to feedback received from the community “to identify the greatest needs and opportunities for families in the community, to ensure the delivery of programs, amenities and services throughout Delta that support the life-long health, well-being and engagement of citizens”

Programs included in the Delta Families First initiative include offering a two-week priority registration period for Delta residents looking to sign up for programs offered through the city’s parks, recreation and culture department, and the new Baby Daze program. Both are due this summer, with more information “coming soon.”
