New seaside homes at Departure Bay are going up and contruction is on schedule for a mid-summer completion date.

Legasea, a six-home project on Departure Bay Road, held a ground-breaking party Wednesday at Departure Bay’s Kin Hut.

“We’re probably more than halfway,” said Cody Dreger of Layzell Dreger Walton and Associates/ReMax. “We’re working on the third floor and finishing that up; we’re hoping in the next two weeks to be working on the rooftop and having the roof basically on and having the whole elevation.”

Legasea is a project of Tony Harris Developments Inc. and Dreger said Harris and everyone else involved in the project is excited about how it fits into revitalization of Departure Bay.

“Hopefully we spur other development down here, because I think the neighbourhood really wants to see that,” Dreger said. “They’re very protective of their neighbourhood. They want to see the quality. They want to have us as builders respect their visions and their height restrictions and we have.”

The homes are close to 2,000 square feet, plus garages, each with nearly 1,000 square feet of deck including rooftop patios.

Facing the street and the bay, there will be commercial space for a coffee shop with an ice cream window.

Because of the archaeological sensitivity of the area as a former Snuneymuxw First Nation village site, Legasea sits atop a slab foundation.

A previous project in the area fell through, which created some skepticism, said Dreger, but he’s now confident the last two Legasea homes to be sold, starting at $749,000, will be snapped up in short order.

“A lot of people didn’t believe it, and now that it’s actually happening … you’re getting that excitement,” he said.
