The District of Elkford is continuing with their return to normal operations in a pandemic world.

As part of phase three of a four phase COVID-19 reopening plan, the district reopened the Elkford Aquatic Centre on July 8, 2020. Visitors to the centre will notice strict health and safety protocols in place and are asked to have patience with staff and with each other when visiting the pool.

Prior to COVID-19 closures, the pool was shut down for annual maintenance and improvements and the District of Elkford is excited to welcome patrons back to the freshened up facility.

For specific information on key changes to protocols at the aquatic centre, please visit the District of Elkford website or Facebook page.

Residents of Elkford should also note that the gravel portion of Alpine Way will be closed from Monday, July 13 to Sunday, July 19, although the closure may extend into the next week. This section of Alpine Way stretches from Highway 43 to the David Crescent entrance, as well as to the intersection of Cassiar Drive and Dorita Crescent.

The closed section of road will be undergoing construction and will not reopen at night. Residents are asked to practice patience, use an alternate route, and to keep clear of all construction equipment until the work is complete.

The District of Elkford would also like to remind citizens that there are outdoor watering restrictions in place between April 1 and September 30. Even numbered houses may water on even numbered days while odd numbered houses should restrict their watering to odd numbered days.

Finally, the district council met on July 13, 2020 to discuss a variety of topics that hold importance in the community. Councillors discussed the appointment of councillor representatives to the Elkford Housing Society, as well as considered several bylaws.

District council also received a report recommending that council approve the construction of a storage facility for the leisure services department at a cost of $189,390, excluding GST, from SBL Contractors Ltd.

Another report submitted at the meeting recommended that the district waive the application fees related to the development of a new seniors’ housing complex at 214 Alpine Way. Teck has donated the land for the housing complex and the Elkford Seniors Housing Society has retained Parastone Developments Ltd. to design and build the structure.

Finally, councillors considered a report from the director of engineering and public works that proposed various traffic calming initiatives. Staff will investigate these options further and present their findings to council at a later date.
