During the October 14 meeting, the District of Kent Council has given staff the go-ahead to apply for a $10,000 Transportation Planning Grant. If the district gets the grant, the money would be used to hire a consultant to work with officials as they plan to develop new infrastructure projects like bike lanes and road widening.
District officials created the current iteration of the Active Transportation Plan in 2015; the original was developed in 2009. Through this plan, the District created the Mountain View Trail, Centennial Park Perimeter Trail and widened Highway 9 between Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs. Future projects listed in the plan are focused on bicycles and pedestrians, including sidewalks, future bike lanes, signage and more.
On a provincial level, a number of Chilliwack-Kent riding candidates have expressed their support for widening Highway 1 to streamline local transportation and pledged to support conservation and outdoor recreation efforts in the area.
