The Conservation Offices has confirmed a cougar has attacked and killed a dog on the Biss Road area of Forest Grove.
“There was a dog killed. Conservation officers attended the same day but were unable to get the cat that day. They went back the following morning with cougar hounds and were successful in removing that cat,” said Sergeant Jeff Tyre of the Conservation Office.
The cougar was a mature healthy male.
According to Tyre, the year has seen a higher than average conflict year for cougars in the area, particularly with dogs in rural areas with densely wooded areas.
“The most important thing to do is don’t let dogs out into the yard to run around at night if you can avoid it. Stay inside and keep them close,” said Tyre. “Of course, they [cougars] are ambush predators so they are opportunistic and if dogs are barking throughout the day it might attract them.”
Two dogs were also killed in the Bridge Lake area on Feb. 27 and March 1.
Residents should keep their pets on leashes while walking outside and keep a close eye on their surroundings for cougar tracks and shrubbery long enough for the predators to hide in. Residents should also keep their properties well lit and keep walkways clear.
People should call the Conservation Office at 1-877-952-7277 to report a wildlife sighting as it happens so the office can respond in the appropriate manner.
