An outbreak of kennel cough, a contagious respiratory disease in dogs, has led to the closure of the Town of Creston dog park on Cedar Street until February 4.
The announcement came after the Creston Veterinary Hospital identified the illness in local dogs.
The veterinary hospital cancelled routine appointments and surgeries on Monday in an effort to contain the disease. Vaccination in advance of exposure may prevent or lessen the severity of symptoms.
“All dogs can get kennel cough,” according to the hospital, whose web site provides the link www.pethealthnetwork.com for more information about the illness.
“If you suspect that your dog may have been exposed, please contact your veterinarian to book an exam and be prepared to be seen in your vehicle, so as not to spread the infection further,” the hospital advises.
“Veterinarians have advised walking your dog away from other dogs over the next seven days,” according to the Town of Creston. “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the park closure.”
