The Skaha Kennel Club will continue to hold its annual dog show at the Dale Meadows Sports Complex each year on the Labour Day weekend for at least the next five years.
At the municipal council meeting on Monday, council approved the kennel club’s request for a five-year rental commitment, for the Labour Day weekends from 2019 to 2023.
The annual dog show has been held in Summerland since 2016.
Previously, it had been held in Osoyoos for 10 years.
Caroline Walker, show chair of the kennel club, said roughly half the club members are from Summerland.
In addition to the annual dog show, the club has also held dog handling and dog obedience classes in Summerland for several years.
“Summerland is a dog-friendly community and we appreciate the opportunity to show our community the quality of dogs that live here,” she said in a letter to council.
“We have owners, handlers and breeders of top winning dogs that live right here in Summerland.”
The dog show features 250 to 300 dogs each year.
The event includes the rental of the entire sports complex and overnight camping during the show.
Approximately 60 recreational vehicles are parked on the gravel parking lot during the dog show.
These units do not fit in traditional campgrounds.
The agreement may be cancelled at the sole discretion of the municipality, should unforeseen circumstances arise.
