Police suspect alcohol may be to blame for an unusually high number of calls for service over the New Year’s holiday.

Insp. Warren Brown, Officer in Charge of the Williams Lake detachment, said Williams Lake RCMP responded to 58 calls for service over the 24 hour period on Jan. 1t –– double the number compared to the same time last year.

Many of the circumstances were fueled by alcohol, resulting in 17 prisoners being housed,” Brown said Friday, Jan. 3.

An unusual number of domestic assaults and domestic disturbances were part of this busy period.”

Brown said on a positive note, there were no serious motor vehicle accidents despite high traffic volume and slippery roads.
