Today, Dec. 1 is celebrated as Giving Tuesday, a global movement for giving and volunteering that takes place each year after Black Friday.
Kathie LaForge, director of the Vanderhoof Community Foundation says Giving Tuesday is also the opening day of the ‘giving season’ when charities, companies and individuals join together to rally for their favourite causes.
December is also a gift giving season, and LaForge said the foundation is encouraging residents to “kill two birds with one stone”, by giving a donation to the foundation in the name of a family member or friend.
Additionally, your loved ones can receive a gift card acknowledging your decision to donate to the foundation in their honour, LaForge said, adding people can choose the option of having a gift card sent through the Vanderhoof Community Foundation website.
“Many of us have friends or family members that are very difficult to buy for as they have most everything they could want or need. You and your loved one will be helping us to help our community be all that it can be today, tomorrow and forever,” LaForge said.
Charitable donations are invested into the foundation’s Endowment Fund and the income earned is then granted back to community organizations to help support projects and activities in Vanderhoof and Area.
“Your dollars stay local and since the Board members are all volunteers we have very little overhead,” LaForge said.
