Two days of events hosted by hockey greats from the Montreal Canadiens will provide fun and education for both young and old this weekend.
With schools closed on Friday, February 15, the Montreal Canadiens will host hockey camps throughout the day for young people from Kitimat and Terrace that are interested in improving their hockey skills.
On Friday evening there’s a fundraising dinner hosted by local RCMP and fire department hockey players, Guns ‘n Hoses. The proceeds from the dinner, which is sponsored by LNG Canada, will go towards Kitimat’s C.O.R.E.Y Society.
The RCMP’s Cpl. Brad McKinnon selected C.O.R.E.Y as the beneficiary for its work on educating kids about the dangers of reckless driving.
On Saturday at 6.30 p.m. the Guns ‘n Hoses play hockey against the Montreal Canadiens Alumni in the Tamitik Arena. LNG Canada is also sponsoring this event with proceeds going to Kitimat Kidsport.
Alumni participating in the game are: Richard Sevigny, Oleg Petrov, Pierre Dagenais, Lucien Deblois, Jesse Belanger, Chris Nilan, Brian Skrudland, Jocelyn Lemieux, Marc Andre Bergeron and Patrice Brisebois.
They will be accompanied by coach Steve Shutt and linemates Jacques Lemaire and Guy Lafleur.
Oleg Petrov was the first Russian to play for the team, where he scored 72 goals and 115 assists for a total of 187 points.
Defenceman Patrice Brisebois was the recipient of the Jean Béliveau Trophy in 2009 and had an 18-year career in the NHL, 16 seasons of which were with the Montreal Canadiens, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 1993.
Richard Sevigny played eight years in the NHL with the Canadiens and Quebec Nordiques. He won the Vezina trophy in 1980 and 1981, as well as a Stanley Cup with the Canadiens.
Pierre Dagenais had a 133 point season in 60 games in his last junior year with Rouyn-Noranda in 1997-98. He played five years in the NHL, with New Jersey, Florida and Montreal.
Lucien Deblois played for 15 years in the NHL, the only player that played with Guy Lafleur on three different teams, Montreal, New York and Quebec. He also played for Winnipeg where he was the captain for three years. He was the winner of a Stanley Cup in 1986.
Chris Nilan holds the NHL record for most penalties in a single game with 10 in 1991. He played for 13 years in the NHL, 10 of which were with the Canadiens.
