Parents have until April 19 to provide input on proposals to the school calendar that include extending spring break to two weeks.
During its meeting on March 18, the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District school board directed staff to begin a 30-day consultation on the five recommendations created by the Nanaimo Ladysmith School Calendar Committee.
These recommendations are:
1. To extend the three-year local school calendar to the 2017-18 school year
2. To implement elementary school local schedule guidelines — which means consistent early dismissal on Mondays, consistent Monday to Friday bell schedules, and consistent short (morning) and long recess schedules
3. To implement secondary school local schedule guidelines — which means consistent late start time (9:15 a.m.) on Mondays to allow for Professional Learning Communities time
4. To increase spring break to two weeks
5. To remove a non-instructional day (the District Implementation Day) and replace it with an instructional day
The consultation period began Friday, March 20 at 3 p.m., and it will continue until Sunday, April 19 at midnight.

The school board will receive a report from staff and make its decision at a special business committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at 4:30 p.m. at 395 Wakesiah Ave. in Nanaimo.
