A power line has fallen in the alley behind Kamloops Ave. in Penticton following heavy snowfall.

Penticton Fire Department is on the scene and there are no reports of property damage at this time.

“We’ve been experiencing quite a bit of wind this last little while, so it may have been wind,” said Capt. Wayne Mackenzie. “It appears to be a communication line of some sort but you just never know if it’s an electrical line or not, so we have city electrical coming by to check on it.”

According to a recent survey commissioned by BC Hydro, one-third of B.C. residents have encountered a down or damaged power line and nearly 60 per cent do not know to report these instances to 9-1-1.

Residents are advised to stay back 10 meters, about the length of a city bus, if they come across a down or damaged power line.

“This is the first call we’ve had today, but with the wind we could hear about more lines coming down,” said Mackenzie.
