Drinking in front of detachment nets fine

Two summer workers have been fined after chugging beer in front of the Kelowna RCMP detachment.

The men, one from Ontario and the other from New Zealand, were sharing a six pack of beer and posing for pictures by the RCMP sign in front of the Doyle Avenue detachment.

The behaviour offended citizens who were coming and going from the detachment; complaints were made to the RCMP.

An officer spoke to the pair, who pled ignorance regarding laws pertaining to the consumption of alcohol in public in Kelowna.

Const. Kris Clark said they changed their tune when asked if it was legal in their own home towns.

The men were directed to pour out their remaining beer and were served violation tickets for Consume Alcohol in Public, under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act. The ticket carries a $230 fine.

“We continually remind the public, especially during the summer months, our members will ticket those who commit offences under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act, whether it happens on the beach, on the street or even in front of the RCMP detachment,” said Clark.
