A man who caused a 2015 head-on collision in Abbotsford that seriously injured a 21-year-old woman has been sentenced to nine months in jail.
Balraj Cheema, 55, was also given a two-year driving prohibition and two years of probation during his sentencing hearing at Abbotsford provincial court on Monday Sept. 11. He was also ordered to pay the victim $200 and give a DNA sample.
Cheema had two other charges – impaired driving causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm – stayed after he pleaded guilty earlier this month to causing an accident resulting in bodily harm.
The collision took place late on Sept. 13, 2015 on Old Yale Road near St. Moritz Way, where Cheema’s Dodge pickup truck collided with a Dodge Sedan. The sedan occupant, Jocelyn Visser, was trapped in her car before being extricated by emergency crews and airlifted to hospital in serious condition. Visser had been driving home from her job at the Save-On-Foods on Whatcom Road.
Cheema sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by ground ambulance.
