A four storey Rockland home was destroyed after a fire ripped through the building early this morning, sending one man to hospital.
Victoria Fire Department arrived around 2 a.m. and witnessed fire engulfing the entire top floor of the building at 1114 Rockland Ave., where one man was trapped on the roof.
Fire crews used a ladder to rescue the man, who was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. Another 16 displaced residents are being temporarily housed at a Salvation Army shelter.
It took 20 firefighters and three fire trucks several hours to extinguish the fire in the 20-unit rooming house.
The building is now considered uninhabitable, said Fire Chief Paul Kowalyk.
