Easier to reach health information

Easier way to get health information in B.C.

British Columbians have a new way to receive health information. HealthLink BC’s Dietitian Services can now be contacted by email.

In a recent press release, the Ministry of Health explained that “British Columbians are now able to email HealthLink BC’s Dietitian Services any nutrition or food-related concerns they have as part of the Province’s commitment to make the healthy option the easy option.”

HealthLink has also added 10 more dietitians, bringing the total up to 30.

These dietitians provide information on how to manage chronic disease, allergies, baby nutrition and general questions.

HealthLink BC’s Dietitian Service is also available over the phone through the number 8-1-1 or 7-1-1 for the deaf or hearing impaired. The phone line receives about 19,000 calls each year.

“Improving access to dietitians with additional hours and now an email service is a part of Healthy Families BC approach to support British Columbians in managing their own health and reducing chronic disease.”

The province hopes that this program will help improve the health of people living in British Columbia and “avoid up to $2 billion in yearly health-care costs.” A report released by Dr. Perry Kendall, provincial health officer, said that obesity costs the economy $830 million a year.

“We want British Columbians to have simple access to practical advice when planning a meal. Whether by telephone, or now by email, it’s never been easier to make the healthy choice the easy choice for information on what food is best for families,” said Michael de Jong, Health Minister.
