Elderly man hit by car

Elderly man hit by car in downtown Nanaimo. Driver not facing charges.

An elderly man was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital after he was hit by a car Monday.

The mishap occurred about 2 p.m. when a 78-year-old man crossing Nicol Street at the Esplanade intersection was struck by a grey 1999 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 77-year-old woman.

“Witnesses stated the pedestrian crossed on a red light and the driver could not avoid a collision,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

O’Brien said the last word on the man’s condition was that he was in stable condition in hospital.

No charges are pending against the driver of the Toyota.
