As residents get ready to make their mark at the advance polls this weekend, those heading to the Greater Vernon Recreation Centre are reminded of ongoing construction.
Visitors are to use the west entrance to the building during construction of the bridge and front entrance. The Halina Centre parking lot located off of 35th Avenue and the curling rink parking lot located off 39th Avenue are also available for parking. Parking is also still available in front of the recr centre and Performing Arts Centre, and visitors can follow the signs leading to the west entrance.
“It can be a bit of an extra hike around to the alternate entrance, but we are glad that people have been very supportive of the project and walking the extra distance,” said Doug Ross, Director of Recreation Services. “We are really pleased that our numbers for the pool and other programs and events in the centre have remained strong.”
The renovation project includes a new bridge at the main entrance, improved accessibility to the centre and an expanded lobby. Additionally, a new outside people space and healthy-choices food kiosk are anticipated to be completed by Spring 2016.
The rec centre auditorium is an advance polling location and main polling station for the upcoming federal election. Advance polls begin Friday, Oct. 9 and run through to Monday, Oct. 12. Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. each day. Election Day is Monday, Oct. 19.
The annual Vernon Ski Swap also takes place at the rec centre on Friday, Oct. 16, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. for consignments and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, for the sale.
