The organizer of the popular Glow Christmas light display in Milner has announced his candidacy for Township council.
Jonathan Houweling says he is running on the basis that voters are looking for politicians from the next generation, who have “common sense, morals, values and principles.”
“They are looking for candidates that are not entitled socialists, but believe in personal responsibility and accountability,” Houweling said in a press release.
“Candidates that are in touch with reality, and don’t just share nice words and concepts, but those that have a position, a platform, and a plan. But also, maybe more than anything, candidates that are respectful, honest, trustworthy and hardworking.”
Houweling, who turns 30 years old on election day, was born in Murrayville and raised on a greenhouse farm in Aldergrove. He and his wife, Lauren, have one son, Hudson, and another baby on the way, and currently call Willoughby home.
He has worked in the agriculture industry in farm and business insurance, and recently organized the Glow Christmas event at Milner Gardens, which saw 120,000 people attend. He has also volunteered in developing countries around the world, including the Philippines, Cambodia and Burma.
If elected, Houweling said he will focus on issues of traffic congestion, taxes and fees, crime, economic growth, seniors and development.
“I’m excited to run because there are reasons to be optimistic about the future,” he said.
