The Observer asked Paul Demenok and Nancy Egely, the two candidates running to represent Area C, South Shuswap, at the Columbia Shuswap Regional District board of directors’ table, to provide a short bio as well as answer the question: What do you think is the most pressing issue facing your electoral area and what solution to that problem do you propose?

Bio:

Paul has been CSRD Area C Director since 2012, and before that was President of Shuswap Lake Estates Community Association. Paul was President of Science & Medicine Canada, for over 20 years where he collaborated with medical associations and societies across Canada.

Involved with boards for 35 years, Paul is a strong voice for Area C. He Chairs Shuswap Watershed Council and CSRD Electoral Area Directors Committee and sits on Shuswap Community Futures Board.

Paul volunteers for Canadian Cancer Society and enjoys family, friends, travel, reading, outdoors, golf, curling, music and theatre. Paul and Sue enjoy their view of Blind Bay every day.

What do you think is the most pressing issue facing your electoral area and what solution to that problem do you propose?

Area C is a collection of communities, each with its own differing needs and issues. Overall, the South Shuswap needs infrastructure investments in sewers, roads, potable water supply, housing, parks, recreation centres, and health care facilities such as assisted living. There is no single solution to this complex issue. A successful approach requires an in-depth understanding and appreciation of local issues, knowledge and experience with various government mandates- funding programs and processes, perseverance, leadership, energy, and a strong voice to investigate, advocate, collaborate, consult and communicate. Perhaps most importantly, solutions require the development of good relationships over time.
