Election officers are set to be appointed by Chilliwack council Tuesday to get the ball rolling on the school trustee byelection proposed for Feb. 13, 2021.
A trustee seat became vacant recently when Daniel Coulter stepped down as trustee on the heels of being successfully elected MLA for Chilliwack on Oct. 24.
Since the Chilliwack School District entered into an agreement with the City of Chilliwack to conduct its elections and byelections, it means city officials must now take required steps to prepare for the byelection.
All rules and regulations that apply to general local elections apply to a byelection with a few exceptions, according to the staff report of the Dec. 1 council meeting.
In order to proceed with the byelection prep, approval of appointments of the chief election officer and deputy chief election officers are before council at the Dec. 1 meeting.
The recommendation is to appoint Jacqueline Morgan as chief election officer and Jennifer Kooistra, Erik Leidekker, and Janice McMurray as deputy chief election officers for the 2021 byelection.
Following their appointment, “legislation requires the byelection to be held” on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, according to the staff report.
