Damage is estimated at $2,500 after a fire in a freezer at the Kootenay Co-op on Thursday.
Nelson Fire and Rescue Services says it responded to a report of smoke coming from one of the retail freezer units at 7 a.m.
The fire alarm was activated, which prompted an evacuation of the store and the residential units above it.
One freezer had indications of an electrical fire with smoke in and around the unit. The first arriving crews ensured the fire did not spread beyond the freezer and isolated the power to the unit.
Firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine and two utility vehicles. No injuries were reported.
The cause is still under investigation.
