The Kootenay region took home a total of 25 medals from the BC Winter Games, held in Fort St. John last weekend. With eight gold medals, eight silver and nine bronze, youth athletes from the Kootenay proudly represented their communities in a variety of sports.
Sparwood’s Lane Ogden took home a silver medal for archery, making his teammates and coaches very proud. Ty Marasco was another Elk Valley athlete competing in archery at the games, coming in sixth place in the qualifying rounds.
Bree Chardonnens, a talent young figure skater representing Sparwood placed eighth in the juvenile women’s figure skating category.
Wes Robinson-Shaw is a nordic skier from Fernie and had a busy weekend for sure, competing in several different events at the games. Robinson-Shaw’s relay team, which also included athletes from Invermere, Nelson and Kimberley, came in fourth place. He placed ninth in the classic race and 11th in the sprint race. Robinson-Shaw said that while he was happy with his results, he wished that the ski course had not been so flat. That being said, Robinson-Shaw said the thing he enjoyed most about the weekend was “the social aspect of hanging out with lots of other skiers, especially his team.”
The Elkford girls curling team, consisting of Abigail Talbot, Jorja Hamilton, Annaka Rodd, and Taylor Smith also competed at the games, although unfortunately they were unable to bring home a medal.
Dylan Annis and Bea Blocksom represented the Fernie Karate Club in Fort St. John over the weekend.
Two skiers represented Fernie at the BC Winter Games. Fiona Mac Con finished in twelfth place in the girls slalom two day run while Amy Attalla came in at number 31 in the same event. The excitement for Attalla wasn’t confined to the ski slopes, however. Attalla was selected as one of 16 athletes to receive the Coast Capital Leadership Bursary Award this year, earning a $500 award.
All of the athletes tried their best in their respective sports, making everyone back at home proud of their accomplishments. Next up in the world of youth sports is the BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge.
