Emergency crews called to Fifth Street bridge after man found in water

The condition of the man is unknown at this time

UPDATE: The man pulled out of the water under the Fifth Street Bridge succumbed to his injuries. The death has been deemed unsuspicious in nature, according to the BC Coroners Sevice.

Emergency personnel were called out to perform a rescue from the Courtenay River under the Fifth Street Bridge Wednesday morning.

Courtenay Fire and RCMP responded to a call at approximately 11 a.m. of a person needing assistance, either in, or near the water.

According to Courtenay fire chief Don Bardonnex, by the time fire crews arrived, the man was already out of the water and BC Ambulance and RCMP were performing CPR under the bridge.

The man was carried on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance and transported to the hospital, but emergency crews did not comment on his condition.
