A group of seniors hiking in the Humpback Road area required assistance when a woman injured her ankle, April 15.
The group of five spanned from 60 to 80 years old. When a female became injured two of the hikers set off for help.
West Shore RCMP and its police dog unit, Langford Fire Rescue and Metchosin Search and Rescue attended the call. One of hikers met with the emergency crews and directed them to the other three.
“The injured hiker and party were on the other side of a ravine, (personnel) made verbal contact at 6 p.m. but they were not rescued until 9 p.m.,” said acting Sgt. Kathy Rochlitz, West Shore RCMP.
During the rescue a firefighter rolled an ATV and was injured and transported to hospital with soft tissue damage, and was later released.
The injured hiker was also brought to hospital.
“When you are hiking in a group it’s best to stick together and to be prepared to be out longer than you expect to be,” said acting Sgt. Kathy Rochlitz, West Shore RCMP.
