Environment Canada has issued a special weather alert for east Vancouver Island on Monday.
A strong low pressure system is bringing “very strong winds” and stormy conditions for the B.C.’s south coast.
The weather statement includes Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay.
“Exposed coastal sections of West Vancouver Island will see speeds of 70 to 80 km/h with gusts near 100 km/h,” according to the weather agency’s statement issued just after 2 a.m. on Sunday.
Inner south coast regions including Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria, Powell River and Comox may see winds of 50 to 70 km/h with higher gusts.
“The strength of the wind will depend on the position and depth of the low pressure system. If the system tracks closer to Vancouver Island, then gusts to 90 km/h can be expected,” Environment Canada added.
Wind warnings may be issued as the situation unfolds.
