Esquimalt is ensuring it has a say in the organization of the 2014 Juno Awards, in the event Victoria is chosen to host the premier Canadian music event.
Coun. Lynda Hundleby was appointed Monday night to represent the township on the awards organizing committee. Esquimalt’s alternate representative is Coun. Meagan Brame.
Esquimalt council agreed at its May 7 meeting to chip in up to $17,000, or $1 per resident, to support the awards, spread out over two fiscal years. Other municipalities, including Victoria and Saanich, have agreed in principle to supply funds.
The Capital Region Music Awards Society submitted its bid at the end of April to host the awards show at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria. The bid package includes a $1.5-million pledge of support from the provincial government.
The 2014 host city is expected to be announced this fall or next spring.
