Everyone in Chilliwack needs to observe stricter social distancing, says Mayor

'This isn't a joke,' Mayor Popove says, warning Chilliwack folks to stay two metres in distance apart

People who are still blatantly ignoring the social distancing recommendations in Chilliwack is becoming a major concern.

A group of youth were hanging out together Sunday after ripping down the danger tape that had been wrapped around play equipment at the Landing Skate Park to signal it was off limits for use.

“This is where the parents need to get involved,” Mayor Ken Popove said in a video meant to warn the community. “Do the right thing. Tell your kids not to congregate.”

But clearly that wasn’t happening over the weekend.

Popove was on a ride-along with Griffin Security owner Brian Goldstone, speaking to some people gathered at some of the parks around town, including a number of teen at the skate park.

The mayor also warned that if folks couldn’t voluntarily adhere to the social distancing rules, a total lockdown on people’s movements could be coming.

“You guys might be healthy, but you might take it home to your mom, or your grandma,” Popove said to the teenagers. “It’s something that we just have to do.”

The only way to stop further transmission of COVID-19 is with strict social distancing, staying at least two metres from people, and self-isolation at home if at risk or with symptoms, warned officials.

Island 22 Regional Park was a little less busy on Sunday than it was on Saturday, which was taken as a good sign.

“It’s way quieter than it was yesterday, so the message seems to be getting out,” Goldstone said.

Griffin Security will be making sure people are adhering to the play equipment closures.

“We are going to come out of this stronger,” Popove said. “Let’s all work together and comply. This isn’t a joke. This is real-life stuff. I do not want Chilliwack to become like Italy. That’s a scary thought.”

Right now City of Chilliwack officials are scoping out locations for isolating people who fall sick, including one for those most vulnerable.
