Faculty in SD 10 had a great experience with the most recent Professional Development Day on Jan. 23.
Several instructors including Erika Momeyer, Gary Parkstrom, Richelle Johnston, Leslie Leitch, Biz Tupper, and Katrina Sumrall were part of a panel to share ideas on environmental education, field trip planning, and risk assessment.
Lorna Newman, SD 10’s director of learning, worked with educational assistants on the final session for crisis prevention intervention strategies to de-escalate conflict.
District enrolment audit complete
The Ministry of Education recently completed its enrollment of three schools in the district, Nakusp Secondary School, Burton Academy School, and Lucerne Elementary Secondary School.
These three schools were audited for enrolment procedures, student records, and Aboriginal programs.
Auditors found files and procedures to be very well organized and very prepared. A final report will be issued shortly by the ministry.
SD 10 takes part in Take Me Outside Day
On Feb. 9 classrooms in the district joined with classrooms across the six Kootenay-Boundary school districts to participate in the first seasonal Kootenay-Boundary Environmental Education’s Take Me Outside Day.
Across the region, over 30 per cent of students were engaged in learning out-of-doors, integrating learning with science, mathematics, language arts, and/or physical health and well being. During the day the students were embedded with the core competencies of the new curriculum: communication, critical and creative thinking, and personal and social responsibility.
One-hundred and fifty students in SD 10 participated, which is equal to 35 per cent of the student population.
Fauquier School Agricultural Land Commission update
The district has been contacted by the ALC regarding its application for exclusion from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) for the Fauqier property.
The ALC has requested a site visit on their tour in late spring to the Southern Interior. The visit will be to review the property and discuss the district’s application for exclusion.
The ALR exclusion is the first step in the potential subdivision of the property into two parcels, one designated for the community of Fauquier, to include the current Fauquier School site. The second parcel would be for sale at market value for district capital revenue.
