Nanaimo city council’s decision to cancel a Leadercast simulcast has cost taxpayers more than $20,000, according to Mayor John Ruttan.
During an open council meeting Monday, the mayor reported the city reached a $14,000 settlement with Nanaimo Daily News for costs associated with the cancellation of Leadercast, a simulcast event the newspaper had sponsored. In addition, the city’s legal fees have totaled $6,135, so far, Ruttan said.
On May 5, council opted to restrict events from the Vancouver Island Conference Centre associated with divisiveness, homophobia and expressions of hate, which led to the cancellation of Leadercast. The motion has since been reversed.
