Games and crafts, interactive entertainment, an outdoor climbing wall, prizes and a free barbeque are all things to look forward to at YMCA Healthy Kids Day this Sunday, May 7.
This festival-like event will take place inside and outside the Kelowna Family Y from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will keep kids busy and active while connecting parents with resources that will help their families live healthier long-term.
“There is something for every family to enjoy,” said marketing and communications manager, Erica Hudson. “And the best thing is, it gets kids outside running, playing, laughing and burning off energy the old fashioned way.”
Some of the activities taking place at Healthy Kids Day include Bouncing Soccer—where kids play soccer while wearing a giant bubble—Wacky Hair, Irish Dancing, Break a Board, Pedal Cars and potato sack races. There will also be educational activities including apple seed planting, an SPCA Fun Zone and an exercise research lab put on by UBC Okanagan.
“With kids’ activity levels trending downward, teaching our kids about healthy living is more important than ever before,” explained Hudson. “Competing priorities, lack of work/life balance, and money are key barriers for parents looking to live a healthy, active lifestyle. The Y is working to make it easier for families to live healthier each day.”
Year round the YMCA of Okanagan offers programs and services which are convenient, healthy and affordable for families. The Y’s financial assistance program makes it possible for families to participate regardless of their background or circumstance.
Healthy Kids Day is presented by Interior Savings Credit Union and will connect families to resources offered both at the Y and through external community partners, while renewing kids’ interest in outdoor, active play.
