Despite reassurances that the event would go on as scheduled, undeterred by the expected milder forecast, organizers JCI Kootenay sadly had to postpone the event.
As of Feb. 6, Horseshoe Lake had about two inches of standing water and roads to the lake had icy conditions. Sheets of rain also left the tobogganing hill icy and exposed rock, ultimately providing unsafe conditions for the families the event intends to bring in.
JCI Kootenay are asking attendees to hold onto their tickets, as they still plan to host the event by the first weekend in March, pending further information on upcoming weather conditions.
The derby is meant to act as a fun day for young families as well as a fundraiser for children battling cancer. Fun activities are planned throughout the day, including exciting grand prizes.
