Pitt Meadows secondary is investigating after students were involved in a fight following the Fraser Valley senior boys’ AAA basketball championship on Friday night at the school.
The gym was loud throughout the game, as Pitt Meadows fans, most of them students, banged garbage cans and cheered in their section of bleachers.
The North Delta Huskies also brought a large contingent of fans, with a drum and lots of enthusiasm.
After the Huskies won the championship game, their fans rushed down onto the floor to celebrate with their players. Soon a fight had broken out between rival fans, with punches being thrown. There appeared to be more than one person involved in the confrontation, which ended with two students on the floor and numerous punches thrown.
Adults on scene, including principal Mike Keenan, got the sides separated, and the post-game awards ceremony proceeded without incident.
Keenan said students from his school appear to have walked into the North Delta celebration. His school has a video surveillance system, and he is in the process of going through footage.
He is dealing with five students from his school, and will be sending clips to North Delta for its administration to review.
Keenan noted the visiting team’s school administrators were also in attendance, and that nobody was injured, to his knowledge. He said the incident will be dealt with at the school level.
