New Hazelton RCMP responded to a two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 16, approximately 38 km west of Moricetown, on March 10, 2017, at 9:28 p.m.
Once on scene, police discovered that an eastbound tractor trailer unit had collided with a moose, sending the moose into the path of a westbound Dodge pick-up truck. The moose struck the Dodge truck, resulting in the pick-up landing on its roof in the ditch, trapping the two occupants.
The driver of the Dodge, a 32-year-old man, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female passenger was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries that have been described as serious.
According to the RCMP, road and weather conditions at the time of the crash were described as partly cloudy and -11 C. Road surface was dry.
The B.C. Coroners Service and police continue to investigate, but do not believe alcohol or speed to have played a role in this crash. Names of those involved are not being released.
