The Fernie Heritage Library is keeping kids busy this summer with socially distant themed scavenger hunts taking place in the library’s lush outdoor garden.
Geared towards children of all ages, this week’s participants were tasked to find an array of hidden rainbows, with sweet treats available for those who completed the challenge. Books relating to each week’s theme are also selected, displayed, and available for the public to borrow.
“Scavenger hunts are a way to engage our community while utilizing our beautiful garden during the summer,” said community programmer, Michelle Kucera-Boyd.
The library’s Summer Reading Club is also in full swing. Relating to each week’s theme are selections of picture books, junior fiction, and non fiction books in both English and French. Free craft kits containing activity sheets with crosswords, word jumbles, and colouring pages are available for pick up. Though the last craft kit for Summer Reading Club will go out on August 14, kids are encouraged to come by the library to pick up craft kits for any weeks they missed.
Earlier this week, the Fernie Book Bike took to the streets, offering a pop up story time at the Fernie Splash Park. According to Kucera-Boyd, the book bike will continue to make weather permitting story time pop ups throughout the summer.
The library is also currently running a Curbside Craft program, with a new craft kit available for pick up each week. The craft kits come with corresponding how-to videos, posted to the library’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
