Fernie residents faced power outages on Aug. 21

Storm debris and lightening believed to be the cause behind Friday's power outages.

On Aug. 21, just under 3000 residents of Fernie suffered power outages due to an equipment malfunction with BC Hydro. Morris Scott, a media representative for BC Hydro, confirmed that about 2800 residences were effected by the outage, which began around 4 p.m.

“Crews were able to restore power by about 9 p.m. It was due to an equipment failure. It could have possibly happened from a lightening strike,” Scott said.

The location of the malfunction was adjacent to the RCMP Station on 5th Ave.

“What I understand is that it was I front of the RCMP station. Something came into contact with out equipment.,” said Scott, who continued by saying that it is still unclear if lightening came into direct contact with the equipment or if it was a third-party disturbance, such as a branch or other pieces of storm debris.

Crews made temporary repairs yesterday and finished more permanent repairs this afternoon.
